Map shows the largest religion for each of the world’s nations. Christianity is the largest religion for nearly 70 percent of the world’s nations and has a presence in at least 97 percent of all nations. An analysis and breakdown of religious affiliation data for each nation is available here with the article Christianity is the majority religion for a majority of countries.
Largest religion by country
Sources: GeoJSON for mapping is from https://geojson-maps.kyd.au. Religious affiliation data is from The World Factbook, 2022 edition. Analysis by Ray Konig, author of Jesus the Messiah, Jesus the Prophet, Jesus the Miracle Worker, and 100 Fulfilled Bible Prophecies.
This map is based on data from the CIA World Factbook, 2022 edition, which identifies 235 countries and other distinct entities throughout the world.
An analysis of this data, by Ray Konig for Zealization.com shows that Christianity has a presence in nearly every nation of the world.
Other findings include:
- Christianity is the majority religion, meaning more than half of a country's population is Christian, for 152 countries, which is about 65 percent of the world's countries.
- Christianity is the largest religion for 163 countries, which is about 69 percent of the world's countries.
- Islam is the largest religion for 54 countries. Buddhism is the largest for 8 countries. Hinduism is the largest for 3 countries.
- Many Islamic countries, which are mainly in the Middle East and North Africa, have laws to prohibit conversion to Christianity.
- The analysis also shows that Christianity is the only religion that has a majority presence in one or more nations within each of the world’s six inhabitable continents of Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America, and South America.
- And, the World Factbook notes the presence of Christianity in 228 of the 235 countries, which is about 97 percent of the world’s countries.
These findings are consistent with the results of an analysis of data from the 2010-2020 Religious Composition study, by the Pew Research Center, as shown at About-Jesus.org, at World Religions Map.
These findings attest to the accuracy of Jesus as a prophet, who predicted, nearly 2,000 years ago, that his teachings, also known as the Gospel, would be taught to people in all the nations of the world (Matthew 24:14, Luke 24:44-47, Acts 1:8).
